Sharrow Placement

There has been some discussion about the placement of Cleveland Heights sharrow, and we’d like to get your feedback. What do you think about their placement from the curb, or their distance from one another?

According to the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), the Department of Transportation recommends that municipalities install sharrows four feet from the curb on all streets without vehicular parking. These guidelines are embraced as the standard procedure of installation by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).

According to the Ohio Revised code, however, “every person operating a bicycle upon a roadway shall ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable [...unless] it is unreasonable or unsafe to do so” (ORC 4511.55). Thus, with this law in mind, the city of Cleveland Heights installed sharrows at two and a half feet, not the four feet recommended by the MUTCD, since doing otherwise might encourage cyclists to not obey Ohio state law.

The Coalition would like your feedback: how do you feel about the placement of the sharrows? Please complete the form below. In doing so, you recognize that your submission may be presented to the Cleveland Heights City Council and other government employees.
