RIDE FOR MILES

This is a 15-mile ride from John Carroll to Gates Mills and back. Registration is $25. RIDE FOR MILES is a nonprofit organization established by family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Miles Coburn to educate people about the environment and bicycle safety. The annual noncompetitive bicycle ride, Ride for Miles, raises funds for the John Carroll University Biology Department’s Miles Coburn Environmental Symposium. This project continues Miles’ work of educating students and the community about the urgency of environmental activism.

NOACA Needs You for Bike/Pedestrian Count!

With the generous help of volunteers, the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) conducts bicycle and pedestrian counts throughout Northeast Ohio during the months of May and September annually. These counts are conducted in order to gauge regional and local levels of bicycling and walking, identify trends based on count data to aid the planning and design of multimodal transportation infrastructure, and aid in the prioritization of bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure and planning projects.
Fall 2016 counts will be conducted on September 13-15 from 5pm-7pm. Volunteers will get a $25-$45 gift card to the athletic store of their choice. You can help by spreading the word and by volunteering! Fill out this survey to sign up:

Aug 17 Bike Ride to Feature Trees

Trees! We need them to feel cool and connected. They add to the beauty of our neighborhoods, improve air and water quality, and increase the property values of our homes.

Join the Heights Bicycle Coalition for a Tree Ride on Wednesday, August 17, 6:30 p.m., beginning at the CH-UH Schools Delisle Center, 14780 Superior Blvd. The approximately four mile ride will feature information about the state of our regional tree health and local efforts to plant and tend more trees on public and private land. Also included will be tips about how to plant and tend your own trees.

The ride will include four stops at points of special interest and will end at Boulevard School, 1749 Lee Road. Rain date is Thursday, August 18, starting at the same time and place.

The ride will be led by Sue Wolpert and Laura Marks, local tree enthusiasts.

Velo Sano !
July 29 – 31.  With signs in front yards all over town, everyone probably already knows about this big Cleveland Clinic ride in July. Velo Sano is a fundraising ride you can do as part of a team or as a solo rider. There are registration fees and fundraising commitments.  Ride lengths are 12, 25, 50, 100 and 202 miles.

Slow Roll Comes to Cleveland Heights on Saturday, June 25!

Don’t miss the Slow Roll Cleveland Bike Ride in Cleveland Heights on Saturday, June 25, from 4-5:30 p.m. Meet at Coventry Peace Arch, on the corner of Euclid Heights Boulevard and Coventry Road.
Slow Roll Cleveland is a group bike ride that normally meets every Monday evening at different locations in Cleveland. But at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 25, Slow Roll will start from the Peace Park at the intersection of Coventry Road and Euclid Heights Boulevard in Cleveland Heights for an 8-10 mile bicycle circuit lasting 75-90 minutes. This is a family friendly ride, designed for all ages, skill levels and rider types. The pace (generally not more than 8-10 mph) allows just about anyone to ride along and feel comfortable cycling in a safe, low-stress environment while enjoying the surroundings.  Lights and helmets are encouraged but not mandatory. Bring an extra tube with you just in case. The ride will end where it started, at the Coventry Peace Park.  From there, riders may join a group heading to one of the restaurants or bars on Coventry. FREE.

Free Coventry Bike Tune-Up Day, June 4, 11am-1pm

The third annual Free Coventry Bike Tune-Up Day will be at Pekar Park Courtyard (NW corner of Coventry Rd. and Euclid Hts. Blvd in CH). Bring your bike to this FREE event. Mechanics and volunteers will provide bicycle safety inspections and minor repairs. First come, first served, and all parts are “while supplies last.” Parts generously donated by Hirobel LLC and Coventry Village Special Improvement District. Tips will benefit Heights Bicycle Coalition. If you can make minor repairs, volunteer to help by contacting Jeremy Komasz.

Slow Roll is Coming to the Heights!

The Family Friendly Slow Roll Ride in the Heights will be on Saturday, June 25, 4 pm, from the Peace Park in Coventry Village. The ride is for all ages, skill levels and riders. The ride will be approximately 8-10 miles and last 75-90 minutes, returning to the Peace Park. Speed is between 8-12 mph. Lights and helmets are encouraged but not mandatory. Please remember to bring an extra tube with you just in case you get a flat tire.

The route will be available a few days before the ride.  After the ride, join riders at one of the restaurants on Coventry.

Other June Bike Activities

Ohio City Bicycle Co-op Social Rides are on the first Saturday of each month from 10 am-noon. These free, slow-paced (5-10 mph) rides have themes such as “Underground Railroad” or “Public Art.”  The next will be Saturday, June 4. Ohio City Bicycle Co-op is located at 1840 Columbus Road in Cleveland. Ride your own bike or borrow one of theirs. INFO.

Century Cycles Towpath Monthly Night Rides these free rides start at 8 pm and take 1.5-2 hours. The June 4 ride includes a free night of camping if you bike with your gear. INFO.

Sunday in June is organized by the Cleveland Touring Club. This year it’s on Sunday, June 12 and starts from Century Village in Burton. This is a fully supported classic tour through the heart of Northeast Ohio’s Amish countryside. The ride includes rest stops, well-marked roads, maps and SAG support. Distances are 26, 40, 50, 66 and 102 miles over rolling to hilly terrain on the rural roads of scenic Geauga County. Bicyclists can leave as early as 6:30 am, $35 per rider, advanced registration is recommended. INFO.

A presentation on Sustainable Cuyahoga: A toolkit of recommended best practices for cities in Cuyahoga County on Monday, June 13, 6:30 pm at the Lee Road Library (2345 Lee Road, CH). Learn about this new guidebook from Cuyahoga County Director of Sustainability, Mike Foley, in partnership with David Beach, Executive Director of the GreenCityBlueLake Institute. You can bet bicycling is a part of it!

Cleveland Velodrome’s Father’s Day Ride to the Hofbrauhaus is a 10+ mile ride on Sunday, June 19. Registration starts at 9 am with ride departure at 11 am. It’s free, but donations to the Velodrome are appreciated. INFO.

Ohio City Bicycle Co-op Shop Classes – space is available in June. Learn more about maintaining your ride. The Co-op offers a series of four classes. The fee is $100, and registration is required. INFO.
