Heights Cyclist wins Alleycat Race

Capello with his bike and new Chrome jersey.

Michael Capello, an employee at Cain Park Bicycle, took first place at the “Scum City Alleycat” race this Saturday afternoon. Competing against 30 other cyclists, Capello completed the complex 13 mile course in 44 minutes. He took home over $225 in prizes, including a BaileyWorks messenger bag, a t-shirt, and a limited edition Chrome jersey. Coveted by bicycle messengers for its rarity, the jersey is available only to winners of Chrome sponsored races.

Alleycat bicycle races attempt to recreate the routes taken by bicycle messengers during their workday. The racers are provided a manifesto of checkpoints at which they must complete a task. Some of the tasks Capello completed during Saturday’s race included doing 15 push-ups, having his manifest signed at checkpoints, and riding to Cleveland’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum to learn the name of Alan Freed’s radio show (answer: “The Moondog House Rock and Roll Party”)

Capello raced on a custom built 2008 Cinelli x Mash fixed-gear bicycle, with a gear ratio of 49t x 17t. The aluminum frame includes a carbon-fiber fork, Thomson seat posts and stem, a Phil Wood rear hub, weighing a total of 17 lbs.
